Siargao has been attracting both local and international tourists for the past few years. A huge hit for wave riders and alike because this teardrop-shaped island is widely regarded as “the Surfing Capital of the Philippines”.
Back in 2016, we went to Siargao with friends and I even wrote a travel guide on how you can get there. I think on that same year (because of the number of tourists coming to the island) some airlines start having a direct flight to Siargao. It is more accessible now more than ever, welcoming daily flights from Cebu, Manila, and Clark.
The island of Siargao enjoys being one of the famous tourist destinations we can’t deny the fact that tourism-related activities also have a negative impact on the environment. I love Siargao for its natural and laidback atmosphere. So a BIG shout out to Cebu Pacific, along with the Philippines’ Tourism, Interior and Local Government, and Environment and Natural Resources departments, for taking the initiatives for sustainable tourism program the called “Juan Effect”. The “Juan Effect” was launched last October 1, 2018. that aims to promote responsible travel More details here: Cebu Pacific Air’s Juan Effect
I know you’re so excited to visit Siargao and I want you to make the most of your trip. So, I listed down my top 10 things you can do there.
10 Exciting Things To Do In Siargao
1)Go surfing!
Whether you’re a professional surfer or no experience at all, don’t worry surfing is for everybody in Siargao as long as you’re willing to ride the waves.
I know most of us wanted to try this sport even just once but scared because you can’t swim (I feel you). Luckily it’s possible! My friend did it so don’t be afraid. You’ve come to one of the best surfing spots not only in the Philippines, so it’s the best place to try and experience it. Just find a surfing coach!
Where can I find a surfing coach? Well, you can definitely ask around or do some research about it. I’m sure you’ll find some good ones.
2) Strolling at Cloud 9 Boardwalk and View Deck
You don’t want to miss this! Going to Siargao won’t be complete without a picture of you and the Cloud 9 Boardwalk and View Deck. Take in the amazing view at Cloud 9 Boardwalk & Viewpoint, Siargao. In the area, there is a boardwalk that leads to a view deck where you can see the magnificent view of the sea, listen to the sound of the waves, and watch surfers having fun. There are a few restaurants in the area as well.
3) Go Swimming at Magpupunko Rocks and Tidal Pools
Magpupungko beach and tidal pools is just one of the many natural attractions you can find in Siargao that should definitely be on top of your list to visit. This gem is home to a beautiful white beach and natural pools where you can swim on low tide. The best time to go there is beyond 11 am (low tide). You can’t enjoy your visit during high tide because these stunning pools only show up during low tide. I recommend you wear comfortable Watershoes.
4) Rent and Ride a Motorcycle or Bicycle Around the Island
The best way to explore any islands in the Philippines is through renting a motorcycle or a bicycle. So I highly recommend you do it too when you are in Siargao. It’s a great way to wonder what the island has to offer. But of course, there are many ways you can get around the island of Siargao — car(yes, you can bring your own), van, tricycle, and habal-habal.
The roads in Siargao is very picturesque that even before you reach your destination, the ride itself is already a beautiful attraction. Enjoy those coconut trees and relaxing green scenery along the way which makes exploring the island extra fun!
5) Go Island Hopping: Three-Island Tour
Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island are the three most popular nearby islands in Siargao island. One of the most popular activities is to get off the island and go island hopping from Siargao to see those beauties. Each has its distinctive beauty, so the experience won’t seem redundant. So head on to General Luna to book an island hopping!
Naked Island: The island hopping starts at the Naked Island. This island is just a small sandbar, which earned its name by literally just being sand.
Daku Island: The biggest island of the three and a great place for a swim and lunch. Among the three, this is the only island that has small huts line the beach, perfect for chilling in the shade and enjoying your lunch!
Guyam Island: A tiny island covered in coconut trees. It’s name also mean “small” in Surigaonon.
6) Visit Sugba Lagoon
Another popular thing to do on Siargao is to visit the famous Sugba Lagoon. Located at the northwestern portion of the island which is a short day trip from General Luna. A two-hour drive from General Luna to Del Carmen port and from there, approximately an hour boat ride to Sugba Lagoon. The activities you can try are renting canoes, bamboo rafts, paddle boards, snorkeling, swimming, and diving board. A spectacular lagoon surrounded by mountains is worth exploring!
7) Explore Beaches
There are so many beautiful beaches you can check out in Siargao island. Just to name a few, include in your list the wide stretch of white sand at Alegria Beach, Burgos Beach, and Pacifico Beach.
8) Overnight at Sohoton Cove
Sohoton Cove, also known as Bucas Grande islands, is located in the town of Soccoro in Surigao del Norte. It’s a separate group of islands from Siargao. You can do an overnight trip or just a day trip. Either way, I’m sure you will love the place. And if you happen to visit at the right season, you will be able to encounter the stingless jellyfish, which starts on March to August.
9) Indulge Yourself to Local Food trips!
Due to many tourists coming to the island, there are tons of restaurants and resorts all over the place now. But, the town of General Luna has the most number of commercial establishments on the island. You can choose to indulge yourself from fancy to cheap eats. Here are a few suggestions:
- Harana Surf Resort & Restaurant
- Kermit Surf Resort & Restaurant
- Ronaldo’s
- Buddha’s Surf Resort
- Mama’s Grill
- Aventino’s Pizzeria
- Shaka Siargao
- Café Loca
And of course, make sure to try fresh coconut!
10) Enjoy a Nightlife in Siargao
After a long day exploring the island, a nightlife in Siargao is a must try too. You can join in a local Karaoke party (Filipinos love karaoke), chill and enjoy some music on bars, or party at clubs. If you feel like partying just ask anyone where the party is at that night. They will give you the details from pre-location to the actual party.
Also, make sure to ask about the “benefit dance”. I haven’t tried this but it sounds fun! In our countryside, we call it disco but here they call it benefit dance. People dancing in the middle of a well-lit basketball court with the locals. And during a benefit dance, a person can sponsor a dance and the whole community can dance to it.
I hope this will help you on your trip to the beautiful Siargao island.
The booming tourism industry has its positive effect on the economy and livelihood of the people but it also has its negative impact so Don’t Forget to Travel Responsibly!
PS – During my visit, I wasn’t able to take a lot of pictures as I spent most of my time enjoying the place with my friends. So, a huge shoutout to my friend ARS for sharing me some of her photos.
